When North Carolina State University (NCSU) decided to aggressively pursue development on the new 780-acre Centennial Campus, EcoScience Corporation (ESC) was asked to assist with environmental studies and preparation of environmental documentation on several key projects. Centennial Campus is intended and promoted by NCSU for mixed use as well as a center of partnership between the university, private research entities, and state and federal agencies.
One of the first projects undertaken by ESC involved a proposed Alumni Center and golf course surrounding Lake Raleigh. Our firm surveyed proposed site locations for Section 404 jurisdictional resources, Neuse River riparian buffers, wildlife, and federally protected species. An environmental assessment detailing the results of these environmental surveys, as well as information on infrastructure, stormwater, and socio-economic considerations, was then generated to NC State Policy Act (SEPA) standards. The document went through the State Clearinghouse with no comment.
In 2001, NCSU began the process of relocating the College of Engineering from the main campus to Centennial Campus. Since 2001, ESC has assisted in the preparation of more site-specific SEPA documentation for areas targeted for Engineering Buildings I, II, and III. These site-specific SEPA reports detail information regarding individual project plans, descriptions of land use and infrastructure, extents of disturbance, stormwater management, predicted project effects on groundwater, surface water, wildlife, and vegetative community resources.
