EcoScience Corporation (ESC) personnel have developed bankfull regional curves from an extensive database of stream geometry parameters collected on reference streams located in the North Carolina Coastal Plain Physiographic Province. The bankfull analysis has helped established construction parameters for natural channel design projects in the Coastal Plain, including stream restoration and relocation efforts in the region. A paper describing the study and results has been published in the Journal of the American Water Resource Association.
The bankfull analysis identified 24 sites supporting primarily rural drainage areas, ranging from 0.6 to 182 square miles. Half the measured streams are from gaged sites monitored by the U.S. Geological Survey. Stream geometry parameters were surveyed at each site including plan form, profile, and dimension.
Power functions were developed, relating drainage area to bankfull discharge, cross-sectional area, width, and depth. Recurrence intervals of bankfull events were estimated using both the conventional Log-Pearson Type III distribution of peak annual discharge and a partial duration series of average daily discharge.
