EcoScience Corporation has developed and implemented detailed mitigation plans on behalf of the N.C. Ecosystem Enhancement Program (EEP) for the Howell Woods Mitigation Site (Site), an approximately 140-acre tract located at the southern edge of the Neuse River floodplain. The Site consisted of a
mixture of agricultural areas, fallow fields, and forested communities located at the outer edge of the primary Neuse River floodplain. The primary on-site hydrologic feature was a dredged and straightened canal, which extended for approximately 5400 linear feet through the Site. The canal connected two man-made ponds and five secondary ditches. The canal and secondary ditches are unnamed tributaries associated with a complex network of streams and sloughs, which connect Gar Gut Creek, Mill Creek, and the Neuse River.
Land-use activities in the Site and adjacent tract were limited due to frequent flooding from the Neuse River and poorly drained soils associated with the floodplain. Due to past and present land use activities, landscape position, and watershed service area, the Site serves as an ideal area for wetland restoration and ecological improvement.
